Windrush: Journey of Discovery is the first painting in a series honouring the Windrush Generation and the wider Commonwealth migrants who journeyed to Britain after the Second World War. Inspired by both the physical and the personal journeys, the painting explores themes of discovery, hope, and opportunity.
At its centre, the ship represents the crossing into an unknown future, while the surrounding landscape blends fragments of memory, nature, history and the future. Mixed-media elements, including embedded documents, form the foundation of the journey and symbolise the courage required to leave one world behind in search of another.
Part historical record and part dreamscape, the painting invites viewers to reflect on the journeys and possibilities that emerged from one of the most significant migrations in the history of all those involved.

My Process
I approached the making of this painting as a journey in itself, allowing the unfolding story to guide my choice of materials. Working in mixed media, I combined acrylic paint with stencils and contrasting textures, gradually building the surface through my signature layers of washes and translucent glazes.
Rather than planning every element in advance, I allowed each stage of the painting to suggest what should come next. Images of distant homelands, the host country and the journey between them are woven together with symbolic elements that speak of migration, memory, identity and transformation.
The process mirrors the journey itself: layered and unpredictable, shaped by what is carried from the past and what is encountered along the way.
