Uncharted Landscape, the fifth painting in a series honouring the Windrush Generation. This is no ordinary garden, but a vibrant, symbolic, eclectic and diverse surreal landscape of international, national and regional flowers associated with the Windrush Generation. The flowers serve as a metaphor for the people themselves, representing the beauty, diversity and unique identities that came together to help shape modern Britain. Each flower strives to live, grow and flourish as part of one nation.
At its centre, a winding path draws the eye towards a field of poppies, symbolising the very reason for the call to help rebuild a nation after the Second World War. The garden serves as a metaphor for discovery, growth and belonging, while the surrounding pockets of water symbolise both the physical journeys undertaken and the uncertainties that accompanied them.
Interwoven throughout the landscape are symbolic barriers that damage some of the flowers and reflect the obstacles, divisions, and challenges encountered along the way. Yet despite these difficulties, the landscape remains rich with colour, life and possibility. Nature finds a way.
And from it emerged a new, uncharted landscape: Multi-cultural Britain.

My Process
I used genuine 23-carat gold leaf across much of the background and all of the sky, allowing its reflective surface to cast a warm, changing glow throughout the painting. I incorporated real sand to create the dunes and give parts of the landscape a natural, tactile quality. The surface was gradually built through layers of paint, washes and glazes, while I kept the flowers light and delicate in contrast to the more heavily textured areas.
Telling this story through an imagined floral garden brought me a sense of joy throughout the creative process, even as I reflected on a reality that was sometimes difficult to comprehend. That tension became an important part of the painting: beauty and hardship, delicacy and weight, hope and uncertainty existing together within the same uncharted landscape.
