Flores Calm explores the idea that beauty and stillness can be found even within a chaotic world. Inspired, like Dancing Dapples, by watching a nature documentary, the painting creates an imagined environment where flowers, water, light and a butterfly surround a solitary flamingo.
The flamingo stands quietly at the centre of the composition, its stillness contrasting with the energetic landscape around it. Bold areas of pink, red, yellow, green and violet merge with recognisable flowers and more abstract forms, while their reflections dissolve into the water below. The surrounding abundance is deliberately busy, yet the central figure remains composed and undisturbed.

My Process
Flores Calm was created around the same period as Dancing Dapples, when I was beginning to move beyond painting alone and experiment more freely with mixed media, texture and different ways of constructing an image.
I built the background through layers of acrylic paint and textured mediums, allowing areas of colour and expressive mark-making to overlap and merge. Some elements are deliberately loose and abstract, while the flowers, flamingo and butterfly provide recognisable forms within the composition. The reflective lower section was worked more fluidly, allowing colours and shapes to become distorted as though reflected across the surface of water.
This is the start of my lace butterfly phase using its delicate pattern and texture to suggest the intricacy of the wings. Lace has since become a material I particularly enjoy using for butterflies and is developing into a recurring signature within my mixed-media work.
The combination of painted, textured and fabric surfaces in Flores Calm represents another early step in the development of the layered mixed-media approach that has become an important part of my practice.
