Firstfruits of Windrush symbolises the diversity, abundance and cultural richness of the regions and communities that brought the first Commonwealth migrants to Britain after the 2nd World War. The story is told through the exotic fruits from the various regions. Empire Windrush sails calmly at the base, serving as a reminder of the journeys that connected distant lands, peoples and cultures.
This surreal painting places the Firstfruits at its centre, surrounded by memories of home and the familiar comfort of the front room—a special place for family and belonging. Also featured is the symbolic glass fish ornament, often found on the windowsills of many West Indian homes, representing faith and hope.
Part memory, part symbolism and part celebration, the painting invites viewers to reflect on the legacy of the first Windrush Generation and how their sacrifices, achievements and contributions continue to bear fruit today.

My Process
I approached this painting through the intuitive, layered process that has become central to my practice. I gradually built the surface using washes, translucent glazes, modelling paste, gel medium and collage, allowing the colours, imagery and symbolic elements to emerge over time rather than planning every detail from the beginning.
I incorporated lace and paper to introduce contrasting textures and fragments of memory, while textured medium gave parts of the composition a more tactile, sculptural quality. I started with a silver leaf background, which gives the painting a cool, fresh atmospheric feel, providing a subtle reflective surface in parts.
I deliberately kept the background loose, leaving some areas unresolved so that the composition moves between clarity and suggestion—like memories that appear vividly in some places and remain indistinct in others. Through this layering of delicate materials, reflective surfaces and expressive marks, the painting gradually became a celebration of the histories, traditions and treasured memories carried by the Windrush Generation.
