DNA: Code of Life is a surreal exploration of the extraordinary structure that carries the instructions for life. At the heart of the painting, the double helix twists its way through a busy, almost chaotic landscape, connecting the different forms and symbols around it.
The painting moves between the microscopic and the natural world, bringing together cellular forms, organic shapes, trees and abstract structures. Some elements appear recognisable while others seem strange or otherworldly, reflecting the complexity and mystery hidden within the genetic code.
The painting is intentionally busy with few breathing spaces. The sense of movement and disorder echoes the complicated journey through which the structure of DNA was discovered while the double helix quietly holds everything together.

My Process
I wanted the creation of DNA: Code of Life to feel as layered and energetic as the subject itself. I gradually built up the painting using washes, overlapping colours, drawn and painted forms, stencilling and textured mediums, allowing the different elements to weave in and out of one another.
Transparent washes allowed glimpses of the earlier colours and marks to remain visible beneath the surface, creating a sense of depth and continual movement. Stencilled patterns and repeated shapes were introduced to suggest genetic sequences, cellular structures and the complex systems contained within DNA.
The double helix was painted as the main focal point, leading the eye through the composition. Changes in colour, tone and line help define its twisting form, while allowing it to remain connected to the surrounding layers.

Original artworks on wooden panels are shipped fully assembled. Hanging hardware is not included, allowing collectors to choose the most appropriate system for their space.
