DeoxyriboNucleic Acid explores the complex journey through which DNA and its structure came to be understood. Rather than presenting a clean scientific diagram or a single moment of revelation, the painting displays as an intentionally busy and beautifully chaotic landscape of experimentation, fragmented knowledge and competing discoveries.
Molecular structures, cellular forms, chemical notations and instruments of observation emerge, overlap and disappear within an energetic field of colour. The magnifying glass draws in the curious viewer, while the organic imagery reminds us that DNA is not simply a scientific formula, but the invisible code carried within every living thing.
Sweeping diagonally through the composition, the double helix provides a strong visual backbone, holding the surrounding fragments together as scientific understanding gradually begins to take shape. The painting reflects a discovery shaped by many minds, different fields of research, uncertainty, collaboration, rivalry and overlooked contributions. It is not a portrait of one triumphant moment, but of knowledge being assembled piece by piece.

My Process
I created the painting in mixed media, gradually building the surface through many layers of washes and translucent glazes. I allowed molecular structures, chemical diagrams, cellular forms and organic imagery to overlap and partially obscure one another, creating the sense of fragmented information slowly emerging through the years.
I constructed the double helix using large-grain sand, significantly raising it from the surface so that it became both the physical and visual backbone of the painting. Its granular, almost architectural presence transforms the microscopic structure of DNA into something tangible, while contrasting with the looser, more fluid areas surrounding it.
I continued layering colour, texture and repeated scientific forms, deliberately allowing some areas to remain dense and unresolved. The process mirrored the subject itself: experimental, unpredictable and shaped by gradual discoveries. I balanced this controlled chaos with quieter areas and strong contrasts, allowing the helix to guide the viewer through the fragments as the composition slowly found its structure.
