Crucified: It Is Finished tells the Crucifixion story through a surreal landscape set against a stark black sky, recalling the darkness that fell upon the earth in the final moments of Christ’s suffering.
At the centre stands the Tree of Life (Christ), and at its apex is the cross. Christ is not shown in human form; His presence is embodied within the tree itself—wounded by the spear that pierced His side. From the wound flow blood and water, travelling through the landscape, cleansing and imbuing life to all it touches. The blood does not end in death; it enters the earth and becomes a source of life and renewal.
The crown of thorns hanging over the cross as a reminder of suffering and humiliation, while the purple cloak speaks of the Kingship of Christ—a King whose throne was a cross and whose crown was made of thorns. Above, the Holy Spirit appears in the form of a dove, bearing witness to all that unfolded.
Nature, responds as it is nourished by the life-giving blood and water. The painting invites the viewer to contemplate the greatest act of sacrificial love ever bestowed on humanity.

My Process
I created this painting in mixed media on a wooden panel, gradually building the surface through thin layers of washes and translucent glazes. This allowed the colour, light and shadow to develop slowly as the work evolved. I used textured mediums to create depth and give the natural forms a more tactile presence, while heavy modelling paste was used to create the spear, which was then covered in gold leaf, drawing attention to it as one of the painting’s pivotal symbols.
I did not fully plan the composition from the beginning. It emerged from my understanding of the Crucifixion story and from allowing my imagination the freedom to explore its meaning. As the painting developed, each symbolic element found its place, bringing the narrative together through an intuitive process of layering, reflection and discovery.
