After Three Days and Nights is my symbolic interpretation of the Resurrection, told through the language of contemporary surrealism rather than a literal scene. Set in the quiet moments of early Sunday morning on Resurrection day, the painting reflects the hope, wonder and transformation of Christ's victory over death.
Instead of portraying Jesus in human form, I represent His resurrection as a cloud emerging from the doorway of the tomb, charged with divine power. The dark clouds in the sky begin to roll away, revealing a golden sky and new life. The stone has been rolled away, while the Lamb stands watch over the scene.
The landscape is rich with symbolic references, from the olive groves and the Tree of Life to the seven golden lampstands representing the seven churches. Flowers, bees, butterflies and other living forms celebrate the interconnectedness of creation, while the golden path hints at the many ways we can be drawn away from the true path.
This symbolic landscape invites the viewer to explore, reflect and discover its many layers of meaning.

My Process
I loved bringing the story of Resurrection morning to life through this painting. Working on a large canvas gave me the freedom to paint expressively. This is my most heavily textured painting to date, building heavy texture into the tomb, Tree of Life, and stones to create a real sense of depth and atmosphere.
Layers of colour washes, gold leaf and subtle golden sparkle bring the light to life, allowing the lampstands to shimmer as they catch the changing light in the room. I also enjoyed incorporating lace into the butterfly, giving it a delicate texture that makes it truly unique.
